How Is Air Freight Chargeable Weight Calculated from China?
Airfreight charging can consider both actual gross weight and the space occupied by the packed cargo. Ask the provider which dimensional conversion and rounding rules apply to the quoted service. Confirm the calculation with final package measurements rather than product dimensions.
Separate product weight from shipment weight
Use gross packed weight including the carton, pallet or crate. Record dimensions after final packing, including anything that protrudes.
Ask for the applicable calculation
Request the dimensional divisor, measurement units, minimum charge and rounding method. Do not assume every freight or courier product follows an identical calculation.
Check multiple package sizes separately
List each size and its package count. Combining different sizes into one estimated box can hide the space the shipment actually occupies.
Recheck after repacking
A new pallet, crate or protective packing can change both weight and dimensions. Update the shipment data before booking. Measurements at acceptance can result in reassessment.
Frequently asked questions
Is net product weight enough?
No. Include packaging in the gross weight and use final packed dimensions.
Does a light box always cost less than a heavy box?
Not necessarily. A light bulky box can occupy substantial space.
Can I use one assumed divisor for every service?
Ask for the quoted service’s calculation and units rather than assuming a universal divisor.
How do I report mixed carton sizes?
List each dimension set, quantity and gross weight separately.
Can repacking change the chargeable weight?
Yes. Both the occupied space and gross weight may change.
Why can the final assessment differ from an estimate?
Final measurements, rounding or acceptance conditions may differ from the preliminary information. Ask for the basis of the change.
